The green door in the dream

Fictional editorial example created to introduce Your Stories. This is not a submitted account from a community member.

I had the same dream three times in one week. I was standing in a narrow street in front of a green door. There was a little step, a brass handle and a plant in a cracked pot beside it.

Nothing frightening happened. I just knew I was meant to knock, and then I woke up.

A few weeks later, I was helping my mum sort through some photographs. One showed me as a small child standing outside a house with my aunt.

The door behind us was green. It had the same sort of handle and a plant pot by the step.

I asked where it was. It belonged to a family friend we’d visited a few times when I was very young. I don’t remember those visits at all.

My mum says the photograph used to be in an album I looked through as a child. She thinks I probably remembered it without remembering that I remembered it.

That makes sense to me. But the street in the dream felt so complete. I could picture the other houses and hear someone moving around inside.

I kept the photograph. I haven’t had the dream again.

I’m curious whether anyone else has had an experience like this. Did you find an ordinary explanation, or are you still wondering?

Have you ever recognised a place from a dream?
